ASPO Supports Motion To Dismiss Big Tobacco's Move To Limit and Manipulate FDA Advisory Committees
ASPO joined with 12 other professional associations and public interest groups to support the FDA against big tobacco's court attack on them to tell the FDA who they can and cannot place on the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee (TPSAC). The TPSAC is the FDAs important way to receive advice from the scientific community about how the FDA should regulate tobacco, and was established congressionally when FDA received the authority to regulate tobacco products. The recent legislation providing the FDA with this regulatory authority is our countries most important effort in recent times to reduce the substantial health burden caused by tobacco use. Of course big tobacco knows that they might make less money as the FDA is successful, so now they are even going after the scientists who help the FDA. Once again, the tobacco industry is prioritizing profits over public health.
