32th Annual meeting

The ASPO meeting held in Bethesda, MD, March 16-18, 2008, was a great success.In addition to the previously publicized symposia, there were special presentations and a fun night out of bowling at Strike Bethesda.

The Distinguished Achievement Award was presented to Malcolm C. Pike, PhD, of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. His presentation was titled: "Estrogen/Progestin Dose and Cancers of the Endometrium, Breast and Ovary: Implications for Prevention".

David B. Abrams, PhD, of the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR), National Institutes of Health, was the recipient of the Joseph W. Cullen Award. His presentation was titled: "Systems Integration: Understanding and Reducing Tobacco Prevalence at the Population Level".

Best Poster Award: Tzuyung Kou, MPH, et al., Case Western Reserve University, was the winner of the Best Poster Award for his poster titled "Survival with Watchful Waiting versus Aggressive Treatments among Elderly Patients with Low-Intermediate Grade Prostate Cancer: SEER-Medicare Linked Cohort 1992-2002".

Best Student Poster Awards: 1) Supriya Mohile, MD, MS, et al., University of Rochester, "Falls and Physical Performance Deficits in Older Prostate Cancer Patients Undergoing Androgen Deprivation Therapy"; and 2) Katherine Regan Sterba, PhD, et al., University of Texas, "Relationships Among Pyschosocial Variables in Wives and the Number of Symptoms Experienced by Men in the Postoperative Adjuvant Androgen Deprivation Trial".

Karen Wernli, PhD, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, is the recipient of the Prevent Cancer Foundation Fellowship sponsored by ASPO and the Prevent Cancer Foundation and and funded by the Prevent Cancer Foundation. The title of her research is "Medications, Multivitamins and Breast Cancer Survival". The Prevent Cancer Foundation is committed to indefinite sponsorship of these fellowships.

Educational Workshops were again offered at ASPO this year. They included:

1) Gene-Gene and Gene-Environment Interactions, Instructor: Ellen L. Goode, PhD, and 2) Incorporating Biological Markers into Epidemiologic Studies, Instructor: Nathaniel Rothman, MD, MPH, MHS.
